Xbox Series S suddenly disconnecting my drive : xbox

Some backstory: I’ve been using an external hard drive that wasn’t advertised as “For Xbox” for my entire time I’ve had my Xbox (probably about 2-3 months now) and I haven’t had any problems. Just about a week ago it started disconnecting at random points (never when I was playing, just during idle times) and I would have to unplug-replug it to access my games on it. Just today, however, I cannot access any of my games. I’ve tried different ports, restarting, power cycling, all the stuff on the website and more. Sometimes it doesn’t even show up on the Xbox at all, sometimes I can play RL for about a minute before it crashes.
