Camryn Benoit (2) shoots a layup during the Enosburg Hornets’ close game with in-county rivals, the Richford Rockets on Dec. 12.
Camryn Benoit secured the 34-33 win for the Enosburg Hornets girls’ varsity basketball team with a three-point shot in the game’s final seconds on Dec. 12.
Q&A with Camryn Benoit
What will you most remember about hitting the game-winning three against Richford? During the Richford game, I was feeling kind of slow, and I wasn’t playing as well as I wished I had, so making the shot that put us ahead in those final seconds really gave me the boost of confidence I needed coming into this season. You can ask any athlete later in life about that one play they remember during their career, and they’ll be able to tell you without even thinking about it: this was that play for me. I’ll remember the feeling it gave me when I saw the ball go through the hoop and looked over to see our once pretty diminished student section come alive.
What three qualities does this year’s team have that will contribute to its success? This year, our team’s very young and eager to get better. We’re very energetic and fast, so our defense this year will make or break us. We have great communication on the court, which limits the number of mistakes. And to top it all off, we have great team chemistry!
What would you choose if you had to pick two ways competing in athletics has helped you grow as a person? Athletics have helped me grow by showing me how to build connections with those around me and how to advocate and stand up for myself to protect my right to do something I’m passionate about. As athletes, my teammates and I have had to face some difficult times in our high school athletic career, but being an athlete to me means I have a family that will always have my back, so we fought through the difficult times, and now I feel like our community is stronger than ever.
Enosburg coach Gary Geddes: Cam has taken on a bigger role this year, both offensively and defensively. She’s been working hard and continues to improve. As you saw the other night against Richford, she’s not afraid to take that big shot.
