Geoff Keighley’s annual video game awards return for its 10th year
The Game Awards 2023, the 10th edition of Geoff Keighley’s annual video game awards show and showcase of upcoming games, returns on Dec. 7. This year’s Game Awards promises “an incredible lineup of world premiere announcements and trailers,” as well as live performances and the awards themselves.
What will be at this year’s Game Awards? In terms of new reveals, organizers haven’t outright teased which games (or video-game-adjacent TV shows or movies) might have reveals. Sega is rumored to show something new, as is Dishonored and Deathloop developer Arkane Studios. We also know we’ll finally get a release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox.
In terms of presenters, we know some of the folks who will be joining Geoff Keighley on stage this year to present awards: musician Zedd, voice actor Christopher Judge, Respawn Studios founder Vince Zampella, and Gonzo from The Muppets.
The Game Awards 2022 was a big one, with announcements and reveals from Death Stranding 2, Hades 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Judas, Final Fantasy 16, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. There were other surprises, including appearances from Al Pacino and The Last Of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
There are certainly plenty of big 2024 games coming up that could be at The Game Awards 2023. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Tekken 8 has yet to reveal any of its potential guest characters. And Square Enix might want to show off more about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ahead of its release. On the entertainment front, maybe we’ll get a peek at Amazon’s new Fallout TV show.
One thing’s almost certain to show up at the 2023 Game Awards: more security to prevent people from rushing the stage.
The Game Awards start on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. EST/4:30 p.m. PST. The show will be streamed live via YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, TikTok, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, and Steam.
The shows typically run 3.5 hours, including a 30-minute pre-show. The Game Awards organizers have not announced how long the 2023 event will be, but expect something between three and four hours long.
The full list of The Game Awards nominees for 2023 was revealed in mid-November. Six games are up for the Game of the Year award, which typically closes out the show:
Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 lead the pack with eight nominations across all categories, followed by Spider-Man 2 with seven, Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder with five, and the Resident Evil 4 remake with three. Nintendo has the most nominations across all categories, having received 15.
2022’s Game of the Year award winner was Elden Ring. FromSoftware’s open-world action-role-playing game beat out A Plague Tale: Requiem, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at The Game Awards 2022.
