SOUTH BEND — After a nearly six hour wait, Notre Dame football fans can finally start make their bowl plans … in El Paso, Texas?
Brett McMurphy of the Action Network is reporting the 16th-ranked Irish (CFP) will play Oregon State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Dec. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
The Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando, ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa Bay and even the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, once considered likely landing spots for the Irish were slotted with other teams.
Bowls that were still on the table as of 5 p.m. were the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York vs. Rutgeres; the Dukes’ Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. vs. West Virginia; and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas vs. Oregon State.
The Military Bowl to be played in Annapolis, Md. was also available vs. Tulane.
It will be the second time Notre Dame plays in the Sun Bowl. The Irish defeated Miami (Fla.), 33-17 in 2010 to punctuate the first of Brian Kelly’s 11 seasons in South Bend. It’ll be the third bowl meeting between the Irish and the Beavers. Oregon State won 41-9 in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl and 38-21 in the then Insight Bowl in Phoenix.

The Irish are 20-21 all-time in bowl games dating back to the 1925 Rose Bowl, a 27-10 win over Stanford to cap the 1924 season. Notre Dame is 7-6 in bowls since 2008 after dropping nine games in a row between 1994-2006. Before that the Irish were 12-6 from 1970-93.
The most common bowl opponent for the Irish is a tie between two of the SEC’s elite — Alabama and LSU. Notre Dame is 2-2 vs. the Crimson Tide with wins in the Sugar (1973) and Orange (1975) bowls and losses in the BCS National Championship game (2013 in Miami) and the Rose Bowl played in Arlington, Texas as a College Football Playoff semifinal in 2021.
Notre Dame is also 2-2 against the Tigers in bowl games, losing the 1997 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., and the 2007 Sugar Bowl while winning the 2014 Music City Bowl in Nashville and the 2018 Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
