Developers of the hit action-RPG titles Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red, recently gave an interview after the successful launch of their DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty. During this interview, CD Projekt Red spoke about the development process of the expansion, how update 2.0 came into the picture for the base game, and a lot more. At the same time, the devs also addressed the series’ future, learn more about that below.
During an interview with Gaming Bolt, Magda Zych, CD Projekt RED’s senior writer, was asked about the development of the next Cyberpunk title and the relocation to CDPR North America with a smaller team. Zych said that “a smaller team always works on any given project in the pre-production stage.” Zych added that “access to so many talents in that region” should make the development process much easier for the team, and that the “most experienced people” who worked on the original game “will be part of the production.”
Zych also spoke about what kind of learnings the team has received from the previous title and how they will implement it in the next game. She revealed that she would “probably try to think more about limitations, and about what cool features I can add to create some framework for expectations because the difference between game enthusiasts and game devs is that the former should stay unaware of limitations because that enhances immersion, but the latter absolutely have to be.”
CDPR talks about structural changes after Cyberpunk 2077’s launch
In a separate interview with GameSpot, art director Pawel Mielniczuk revealed the structure CD Projekt Red followed when developing the base game and how it changed for Phantom Liberty. Mielniczuk revealed that they experienced a situation called “Silosis” when developing the original title. There were art silos, code silos, and other departments that worked “on their own part and not really looking outside their silo.” This led to less communication.
This situation was then fixed when Phantom Liberty arrived, as the developers introduced strike teams that consisted of “different developers from different departments and disciplines”. These strike teams worked on quests and ensured that everyone worked as “one team” which helped towards better communication as well as collaboration between these varying departments.
