KALAMAZOO, Mich. — It is very early, but one team sits alone atop the NCHC standings.
St. Cloud State got 23 saves from Dominic Basse and three Huskies had goals in a 3-0 win over Western Michigan on Saturday at Lawson Arena. The win gives the Huskies their first 4-0 start in conference play since 2018-19.
Basse, a senior from Alexandria, Virginia, got his second straight Saturday shutout and his third shutout of the season for the Huskies (6-4 overall). Basse, a Chicago Blackhawks draft pick, is 4-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .953 save percentage in his last four starts. He helped the Huskies go 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies got the lone goal they would need during a power play after a five-minute major for cross-checking to Western Michigan’s Sam Colangelo at 13:13 of the first period. Senior wing Veeti Miettinen, a Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick, scored at 15:53 to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. It is the sixth-straight game that Miettinen has scored a goal. Miettinen leads the Huskies with seven goals, including a team-leading four power-play goals and two game-winners.
SCSU got goals in a 2:13 span of the second period to increase its lead to 3-0.
