Following Sunday’s 6-2 win, the Minnesota Twins will look to take advantage of their new found home-field advantage when they battle the Houston Astros in Game 3 of their American League Divisional Series on Tuesday. The Astros (90-72), who won last year’s World Series, play well on the road and posted a 51-30 record away from home this season. The Twins (87-75), first in the AL Central by nine games over Detroit, have among the AL’s best home records, going 47-34 in 2023. Minnesota has won five of the eight matchups with Houston this season, including a 1-1 mark in the 2023 MLB playoffs.
The game from Target Field in Minneapolis is scheduled to start at 4:07 p.m. ET. The Astros had MLB’s fifth-best batting average at .259, while the Twins were 21st at .243. Shortstop Carlos Correa was a big part of Minnesota’s success in the 6-2 win over the Astros in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Correa, a former first-round draft pick by Houston in 2012, has been on fire in the postseason. In four games, he is 8-for-15 (.625 average) with three doubles and four RBI. He was 2-for-4 with a double in the series opener, a 6-4 Houston win.
Another big part of the Twins offense is outfielder/designated hitter Royce Lewis. The Twins’ top draft pick in 2017 has hits in three of the four postseason games, including a 2-for-3, two-homer effort in the Game 1 Wild Card win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Right-hander Cristian Javier (10-5, 4.56 ERA) is expected to get the start for Houston. In 31 games, all starts, he pitched 162 innings with 62 walks and 159 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.27. He earned the win in his last start, an 8-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Oct. 1. In that game, he pitched six innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, while striking out four. He has faced the Twins once in his career, allowing one earned run in two innings.
Although he is just 1-for-7 in the series with a double, right fielder Kyle Tucker has been a key ingredient to the Houston offense. In 157 games this season, the former first-round pick of the 2015 draft hit .284 with 37 doubles, five triples, 29 homers, 112 RBI and 97 runs scored. He has two doubles and two walks in six career games against Minnesota. He entered the postseason on a six-game hitting streak, and has hits in 12 of his last 15 games, including a 2-for-4 performance with a double, triple and one RBI in the Oct. 1 win over Arizona.
