Electronic Arts is working on the next Battlefield game with its EA Entertainment arm, and a new studio just joined the party.
Said studio is Criterion Games, as announced by a post signed by Vince Zampella.
Zampella, who used to work on the Call of Duty franchise back at Infinity Ward and then founded Titanfall and Apex Legends devoper Respawn Entertainment, is at the helm of the effort to bring the Battlefield series back under a positive spotlight.
Criterion now joins DICE, Ripple Effect, and Ridgeline on working on the “connected Battlefield Universe” which is now in pre-production.
According to Zampella, there’s no better studio to join the effort on the shooting franchise, albeit their involvement may be surprising to some due to the fact that they’re mostly known for the Need for Speed franchise.
Yet Criterion has also helped omn Battlefield 2042, Battlefield V, and Star Wars: Battlefront II, albeit their effort on support roles kept them mostly out of the spotlight.
Criterion’s latest game is Need for Speed Unbound, but them working on Battlefield doesn’t mean the driving franchise will take a back seat. Zampella clarifies that work on the next NFS will also continue.
Recently, Electronic Arts’ executives expressed confidence about the development of the next Battlefield game and in the leadership team working on it.
Recently, the company restructured into EA Entertainment and EA Sport in order to better focus its efforts. It’ll certainly be interesting if all the changes will help DICE and its fellow developers create a Battlefield game worthy of the series’ legacy.
