Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew and Desperados III developer Mimimi Games has announced that it is to shut down.
In a post on its official website, the studio revealed earlier today that Shadow Gambit “will be Mimimi’s final game”, and that the studio will be “slowly ramping down” over the next few months.
Mimimi says that while making games was “amazing”, it was also “extremely taxing”, and that production costs for its titles were outstripping potential revenue.
In addition, Mimimi says that striking a balance between work and family life was becoming “increasingly difficult”, and that managing the studio “proved to be too taxing”.
As such, the studio says it was time to “prioritize our well-being” instead of signing up for the production cycle of another game, which could potentially take several years.
Despite this being the end of Mimimi, the studio says it will continue to support Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew.
An update is scheduled to land for the stealth strategy game soon, and a “big content drop” is also planned for sometime later this year, although we don’t yet know what it’ll contain.
Mimimi Games’ first project (outside of mobile-exclusive games) was 2014’s The Last Tinker: City of Colors, but the studio made its name with the 2016 stealth tactics game Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun.
Following that, Mimimi released Desperados III, a continuation of the classic Wild West-set stealth tactics series.
A standalone expansion for Shadow Tactics followed, after which Mimimi proclaimed it would self-publish its next project, which, at the time, was known by the rather endearing moniker Codename Süßkartoffel (“sweet potato”).
That game turned out to be Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, which launched for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 17th.
It’s not clear what awaits Mimimi heads Johannes Roth and Dominik Abé now, but the two say they “still love video games”, so this may not be the last we hear of them. Stay tuned for more.
