As a Pokemon fan myself, it warms my heart to see the love that so many others have for the series. The time and dedication that undoubtedly went into creating some of the fan games on this list is downright insane.

We recently wrote a list of the best Pokemon ROM hacks, but we’re taking a break on covering ROM hacks for now to gush about some of the greatest fan games out right now.

With these games, you get to explore a Pokémon world you’ve never seen before, use mega evolutions in games that never before existed, and do things you never would be able to in the official Pokémon games released by Game Freak. The list of games would be miles long if we included every single one that’s worth playing, however, we needed to keep this list manageable so some of the other Pokémon fan games that didn’t make the cut here will have to wait until next time.

That’s enough of an introduction, let’s get into the games now shall we?

What Are The Best Pokémon Fan Games to Play in 2023?

The Pokémon fan base has a wide range of amazing Pokemon fan games for players to enjoy. Some have really made a name for themselves and you may find that the quality and feel of them even rivals official Pokémon titles!

Amongst these is quite an impressive list and they all give the player a unique experience awesome stories and solid gameplay.

From the sophisticated mechanics presented by Xenoverse to the eye-catching visuals found within Infinity – it’s clear there’s something here for every Pokéfan out there. This includes traditional Japan vibes from Bushido and also alternatively plunging into Minecraft-inspired realms in Wilds, with additional opportunities to focus on trainer growth when playing Godra too.

Pokémon Xenoverse

Pokémon Xenoverse is a great fan game and it’s clear why this one is appearing on this list. It provides players with a solid story, tons of content, and multiple DLC packs. This Pokemon RPG journey takes you on a more mature and darker mission than most mainline Pokémon games. In it, players work to save the city from the clutches of an evil force.

Players are presented with different options to choose from through the game’s choice-based system. Depending on the choices you select determines how events play out. There are over 70 hours worth of gameplay here, including 18 different gym battles, as well as 8 elite fights you’ll need to beat.

The game has mega evolutions and even various challenge modes for those who want a bit more difficulty in their playthrough. You can also gain access to customizable secret bases too.

There are three currently released expansions of this fan game and also future plans are said to be coming soon that will be adding online play as well. This fan game is a must-play through and it’s clear to see why it made this list.

Pokémon Infinity

Pokemon Infinity is a great Pokemon fan game
Pokemon Infinity is a great Pokemon fan game.

Pokemon Infinity is a beautiful fan game that deserve tons of praise for the level of detail that went into making it. Its world feels super alive, it has a very unique premise and plot, and the UI in this game is what we’d classify as professional level.

The game has dynamic weather and day/night cycles that not only create a unique experience for each playthrough but also give a whole other level of depth to the world-building and feel you get while playing. You can expect to log about 20 hours worth of playtime here and the game has Gen 1 through 6 Pokémon included alongside over 100+ additional custom Fakemon added to it (with regional forms and evolutions included). What’s more, the developers even included online trading and battling elements which are available on the desktop version of the game and or certain app versions as well.

Not only does Pokemon Infinity have an in-depth immersive world that you won’t get bored exploring, but it’s an experience that you can’t quite get in any other Pokemon game, both official and fan-created. There’s a certain level of unpredictability here that comes from the game’s conditions that change every time you play it.

Seriously, it doesn’t quite do it justice when we say that this game is gorgeous and extremely well-designed. It feels like a professionally developed and released Pokemon game, honestly, in some ways even more so than the official games released by Game Freak. No shade intended for the official games, we absolutely love those too, but the polish here is just next level!

Pokémon Bushido

Pokémon Bushido is another fantastic fan-made game that comes with Gen 4 graphics and includes up to 8 separate generations of Pokémon. The game has 10-15 hours worth of gameplay that’s chock-full of monster-catching and battling, downright good fun.

The game features a world inspired by samurai stories and takes players on an exciting adventure. Battles are thrilling and the game has plenty of unique characters that are ready to be discovered. There’s a pretty original story here that’s been crafted specifically for fans of the Pokemon franchise.

Pokemon Bushido is a fan game that was developed originally using RPG Maker XP and uses the Pokemon Essentials starter kit and MKXP. Some features from later generations like the Exp. All HM items are also found here but come with a unique twist.

In Bushido, you explore the beautiful region of Aisho which is home to luscious trees, vibrant waters, clear blue skies, and lots of interesting people to meet across your journey. You’ll choose between one of three starters: Treecko, Fennekin, and Oshawott and you’ll also have to choose between the three different distinct Kenshi Clans. Finally, you’ll also learn about the three Katanas of Bushido: Virizion, Terrakion, and Cobalion, and work to take down the Akui Clan and their heinous ways.

Pokémon Wilds

Pokemon Wilds is a PC fan game set in the world of Pokemon where players explore and collect, train, and battle their favorite Pokemon. The game was originally released back in 2018 and has become a huge hit with Pokemon fans. The developers have plans to release updates to the game regularly, continuing to add new content as time goes on.

You play as a trainer who works to stop the evil Team Flare from taking over the Region. You’ll come across and battle all sorts of different Pokemon, working to level up to be able to take down Team Flare. Along with battling, you’ll also have to explore the region and find hidden items you’ll need along the way.

The game is a procedurally generated sandbox game that has some similarities to Minecraft. The world is divided into biomes and you can find different Pokemon depending on the biome that you are currently in. You can build houses, different structures, farms, keep your Pokemon in pens, and much more.

Pokemon Wilds doesn’t require an emulator to run and can run natively on Windows, Mac, and Linux devices.

If you’re looking for a mash-up of Pokémon and Minecraft, then look no further than the fan-made game Pokemon Wilds. This one-of-a-kind experience offers randomly generated open-world environments featuring diverse biomes with procedurally generated offering unlimited exploration possibilities plus monster-collecting gameplay, all to create a truly unique adventure!

Pokémon Godra

Pokémon Godra is an exciting fan-made ROM hack that allows trainers to choose between various career paths and storylines, as well as maps with quests to complete. It provides two unique halves of the map for players to explore in order to choose the gameplay experience that caters best to their gameplay style.

Changes have been made in typings, abilities, and base stats amongst already existing Pokémon. Alongside focusing on trainer development, the game encourages players to think critically about their choices and strategies.

Pokemon Godra takes place in the region of Godra. The game’s story plays out depending on how you decide to play it. You can choose to either start out in a military-style town in West Godra or to start over in East Godra where trainers aren’t as tightly controlled and you have much more freedom. Ultimately, in Godra you choose who you want to play the game.

Your decisions as you play lead you to different outcomes. It creates a ton of replay value for players and incentivizes multiple playthroughs because you’ll always be wondering what might have happened had you done something differently.

You’ll find over 128 starter Pokemon available in the game to get and the game features Pokemon from Gen 1-6 along with certain legendaries.

The History and Impact of Pokémon Fan Games

The development of Pokémon fan games started way back in the early 2000s with ROM hacks that modified core elements of official titles and brought additional Pokémon to them. Over time, these games have become progressively more sophisticated as some arguably have been produced by fans and have achieved a higher quality than the games released by Game Freak officially.

Such growth in the scene has been possible due largely to tools available for creating such projects and a devoted community around this franchise, which is getting bigger day by day.

Problems like a lack of resources or potential copyright issues are common occurrences related to making Pokemon-based fan works. It’s no secret that Nintendo and Game Freak aren’t the biggest fans or supporters of fan-created Pokemon projects. They’ve been known to shut many down completely in the past and have issued numerous cease and desists.

The Rise of Fan-Made Games

The passion of the Pokémon fandom has resulted in a wide range of fan-made games, there’s really a game for all sorts of players out there. As the internet became more popular in the early 2000s, these types of creations were shared much easier.

Challenges and Controversies

The developers of these fan games can face a number of issues including potential copyright infringement as many draw on existing intellectual properties which can lead to Cease & Desist letters from Nintendo or Game Freak themselves – seen in the case of Pokémon Uranium being downloaded 1.5 million times before it was taken down due to legal action by Nintendo.

The Role of Fan Games in the Pokémon Community

Fan-made Pokémon games are an essential part of the community, providing fresh gameplay opportunities and inspiring creativity between official releases. These fan titles feature characters, storylines, and mechanics that cannot be found in regular mainline Pokémon game releases. They also give players a place to bond with one another by exchanging ideas, artwork, music, suggestions, and support for each other’s work.

Pokémon fan games add to the variety within the universe as well. They open up new possibilities which enhance every person’s experience with this franchise regardless if it’s a casual or hardcore fan. Through these user-created projects, people can express their passion for Pokémon.

Be it playing competitively against others or simply discovering something brand new, there will always be plenty more waiting around thanks to a devoted fanbase who keeps creating some truly remarkable games.

Summary

In summary, Pokémon fan games are an outlet for the passionate and creative people in this community to express themselves. Fan-made titles such as Xenoverse, Infinity, and Bushido have created some truly unique games.

These innovative creations offer something truly special. It’s clear how integral they have become within their own niche. So what are you waiting for? Try out one of the many fan games listed above today!
