The Kickstarter campaign for the rhythm game Ratatan, spiritual successor to the popular Patapon series, has achieved some relevant stretch goals.
The Kickstarter campaign has now passed $600,000 (approximately 85 million yen) which means that the game is now coming to consoles. The developers mention PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in an update.
Another stretch goal for a minigame has been passed, on top of the latest one which unlocks a collaboration with David Wise, popular composer of classics like the Donkey Kong Country series and many more beloved Rare games.
It’s worth mentioning that, while the Kickstarter campaign mentions PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch as the console platforms almost anywhere, a Q&A in today’s update also mentions PS4. We’re trying to reach out to the developers for clarification on this.
Speaking of the online multiplayer, the developers are working on a design that makes the content playable 100% offline in single-player, so that it will remain playable even after the service ends. They’re also looking into the ability to self-host for local multiplayer.
The team would also love to implement cross-play, but since it’s expensive, it’ll be tied to a later stretch goal. Lastly, physical versions will be available for all consoles.
Ratatan was revealed at Bitsummit Let’s Go in Kyoto after being teased about a year ago, while we saw the first look at gameplay last week. It’s designed by Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani and more veterans of the series, with Toshiyuki Yasui as director and Kazuto Sakajiri as producer. The main composer is Patapon and LocoRoco veteran Kenmei Adachi
The Kickstarter campaign was launched just a couple of days ago, and it reached its initial funding goal in 48 minutes. Yesterday, we also got the reveal of three ultra-catchy music tracks.
If you aren’t familiar with the Patapon franchise, the incredibly catchy rhythm series by Sony Interactive Entertainment was originally launched in 2007 for PSP. The first game was remastered for PS4 ten years after, in 2017. The sequel Patapon 2 was released just one year after also for Sony’s portable console in 2008 and then also remastered in 2020. Patapon 3 launched in 2011, but it was never remastered and still remains bound to the PSP.
