Sports are an intricate part of our society, from professional athletes to everyday enthusiasts or kids playing in the backyard. With the legalization of sports betting, the niche has become an even more sought-after form of entertainment. You can indulge in sports as a spectator or wager on the results of games on the best sports betting sites Canada. There is no denying the anticipation of watching a football match, race, or any other event when money is on the line.

We live in an era where you can enjoy watching and betting on your favorite sports and immerse yourself in the thick of the action with sports video games so realistic you can almost smell the hot dogs at the concession stands. This wasn’t always the case. Sports gaming in video games has come a long way from simple computer programs to become the standout immersions they are today.

The 1950s: The Genesis of Sports Gaming in Video Games

The cornerstone of video games was laid in 1952 when the tic-tac-toe program created OXO. While it is considered the first video game, OXO was only developed to display the power of the computer, a relatively new technology created during World War II. The first video game for entertainment wasn’t developed until 1958, courtesy of William Higinbotham. He designed Tennis for Two to play on two separate oscilloscope screens and displayed it at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The game played like a competitive singles tennis match and was popular among high school students.

However, technology was not advanced enough to support commercial computer gaming at the time. Accordingly, Tennis for Two was deemed an impractical venture and dismantled a year later to reserve the machines for academic investments. Nonetheless, it paved the way for a new generation of electronic entertainment.

The 1960s: Taito and Sega Kick-Start Sports Video Games

In 1967, the Japanese company Taito, which specialized in jukeboxes and vending machines, created an electro-mechanical pinball-style game called Crown Soccer Special. Sega and Chicago Coin also entered the sports video games market in 1969, releasing the Grand Prix arcade sports game and Speedway, respectively.

The 1970s: The Pong Revolution

While Pong was not the first ever video game, it was certainly the one that made video games a household staple. This 2D crude interpretation of table tennis (Ping Pong) was created in 1972 by Atari for the first video game console, Magnavox Odyssey. The simple gameplay required players to move an in-game paddle up and down to hit the ball back and forth until one failed.

In the next few years, Taito and Sega pushed sports video games to the next level. Most of the games were clones of Pong based on basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and bowling. Atari also managed to slot in Atari Football, another massively successful game, before ball-and-paddle-style video games became less popular in the late 1970s.

The 1980s: Console Wars Begin

Atari released its flagship console – Atari 2600 – in 1977, and Mattel came out with its own in 1979. However, they did not gain traction until the 1980s as a replacement for ball-and-paddle-style games. Both companies released at least one video game inspired by football, basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, and racing. Also, Taito’s Laser Grand Prix and Sega’s GP World were redone with Laserdisc for the first time and included live-action footage.

Between 1980 and 1985, almost every imaginable professional sport had a video game released in its honor; this included wrestling, horse racing, rock climbing, and bullfighting.

While artificial intelligence first featured in sports games in 1982 (Pole Position by Namco), it did not become realistic until 1987. Electronic Arts (EA) released Earl Weaver Baseball with the technology, surpassing prior baseball game releases graphically and gameplaywise by miles.

John Madden Football debuted in 1988 on the Apple II computer series thanks to advanced graphics, improved AI, and cutting-edge stat-tracking software. Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo followed soon after and ushered in the 16-bit era of sports video games.

The 1990s and 2000s: The Golden Age of Sports Video Games

Systems like Xbox, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Nintendo 64, and Sega Dreamcast made the mid-90s and 2000s the heyday of gaming with a torrent of sports games. Motion capture advancements made athlete simulation movements more realistic than previous releases. Games like Major League Basketball, SSX, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater used such technology.

In the early 2000s, game companies released overlapping sports video games, providing different football, basketball, and hockey versions. In 2004, EA Sports and 2K dominated the market with exclusive NFL and MLB deals preventing other companies from making football and baseball video games.

The 2010s to the Present Day: Achieving and Surpassing Ocular Limits

While the creation of popular sports video games is limited to a few companies, there is no denying how incredibly advanced the niche has become in the past decade. The graphics of the Xbox One and PlayStation 5, coupled with the advent of 4K/8K televisions, have made the games more realistic than ever. Players also get a myriad of options on their consoles, including:

  • FIFA 23
  • Madden NFL 22
  • WWE 2K23
  • MLB The Show 23
  • NBA 2K23
  • Golf Story
  • Forza Motorsport
  • F1 23
  • Cricket 24
  • UFL
  • Undisputed

Looking To the Future

Thanks to advanced tech innovations like virtual reality and augmented reality, players can look forward to unparalleled levels of immersion and interaction. Sports video games will soon evolve to where players participate in simulated 3D worlds. The best is yet to come, even for consoles, which will be fine-tuned for better control and maneuverability.
