The Wii u is a video game console developed by Nintendo and is the successor to the Nintendo Wii. It was released in 2012 and was in the eight generation of video game consoles. During this console generation, the Wii U went up against Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s Playstation 4.
The Wii U was the first console Nintendo released that output in HD. It came with an HDMI cable, but the Wii U still has a multi-out cable on the back that is compatible with the same cable the Wii uses as well.
The Wii U’s main controller, the GamePad, had a touchscreen in the center of it and could be used alongside play on the TV or entirely on its own. The catch though was that the GamePad could only be used within a certain distance of the console and if taken too far away, the signal would be lost.
In addition to the GamePad, the console also had a pro controller that featured a more traditional design. The Wii U is backwards compatible with all Wii games and all of the Wii’s accessories work with it as well. This includes the Wiimote, Nunchucks, and the Wii sensor bar.
The system was unique in that it was Nintendo’s foray into a form of social media, known as the Miiverse. The Miiverse also existed on the 3DS at the time as well. The Miiverse allowed players to share content, both in-game and directly through the Miiverse app in individual video game themed communities.
In addition to the Miiverse, the Nintendo Virtual Console also made its return on the Wii U. Players could purchase classic retro game titles for various consoles and systems such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and more.
The Wii U was met with mixed success. On one hand, some praised it for the innovation Nintendo brought to the table with the GamePad, but sales of the Wii U were quite low and coming off the heels of the Wii’s success, this was quite the blow for Nintendo. The low sales numbers are often attributed to the poor marketing the console received, with many confused on whether the system was just an extension to the existing Wii console, not realizing that it was entirely new.
The Wii U’s launch lineup of games also was a bit lackluster and not many 3rd party companies really jumped onboard to develop for the system.
The Wii U eventually ceased production in 2017, the same year that the Nintendo Switch debuted. The Switch ultimately refined on some features of the Wii U and iterated on the concept in many ways.
How To Emulate The Wii U
It’s no secret that the best Wii U emulator available is the Cemu emulator. Cemu allows players to emulate Wii U games and apps on their Windows PC. It has solid support for many different Wii U games and even supports most online features. Although it should be noted that in order to connect to official Nintendo servers, users must dump some system files from an actual Wii U console.
The Cemu emulator allows you to view the GamePad screen by holding down the Tab key or by mapping it to a controller button of your choice. You can toggle between screens using Ctrl + Tab or you can view the GamePad screen in another window.
The Cemu emulator is pretty well optimized these days, but top level performance may required a higher performing system to be used. The single core performance of your computer’s CPU and its RAM speed are important factors for getting solid emulation.
Can RetroArch Run Wii U Games?
The RetroArch emulator currently cannot run Wii U games because it does not have a Wii U core. That being said, the Wii U emulator Cemu went open source back in 2022 so it is possible that RetroArch will eventually add the Cemu emulator as their Wii U core.
