Diablo 4 has a staggering amount of online content for players to enjoy, which has likely led many to wonder whether you’ll need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Fortunately, Blizzard has given an official answer on the topic, and it differs per player. Keep reading below to find out if you’ll need one of these subscription services to enjoy Diablo 4.
Does Diablo 4 Require PS+ or Xbox Live Gold?
No, you do not need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold to play the majority of Diablo 4. You can experience the solo campaign, endgame content, and couch co-op mode without PS+ or Xbox Live.
However, you need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold to engage with multiplayer content, including PVP, chats, and partying up with other players online.
This was confirmed back in April 2023 by Diablo 4’s Global Community Development Director, Adam Fletcher, on Twitter.
There he stated, “You can play without [PS+ & Xbox Live] but things like chat, partying and world PvP will require.”
However, it isn’t immediately clear that you don’t need these subscription services, as the original Diablo 4 Beta blog post, Xbox and PlayStation storefronts claim you need PS+ or Xbox Live Gold to play Diablo 4’s multiplayer content.
For example, the Xbox storefront says, “Online multiplayer on console requires Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Live Gold (subscription sold separately).”
As Diablo 4 is always online and features multiplayer components that can be enjoyed without PS+ or Xbox Live Gold, it’s understandable why some players may have been confused.
The only exception to this rule is Germany, which requires players to have PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold to experience all aspects of Diablo 4.
Additionally, even though players outside of Germany won’t need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live, they do still need to be constantly online.
