Classic games platform GOG has shared some of its user statistics for 2022. In its roundup, GOG shares users’ favorite genres on the platform, as well as age group distribution, growth, and other stats, and it looks like the platform is doing just fine for itself.
In its end-of-year 2022 rundown, GOG says its active user base grew by 11% and its total user base grew by 18%. Most of GOG’s users are apparently concentrated in Europe; 53% of the platform’s base is located there, with 37% being situated in North America and just 10% finding themselves in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and the rest of the world.
According to the platform, it now plays host to over 1,400 classic games, with 500 “Good Old Games” being listed and 50 iconic classics only being available through GOG. The biggest “iconic classics” releases in 2022 were, according to GOG’s user data, Skyrim, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine, and Wheel of Time, as well as the Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
In terms of community, GOG says that RPGs are its users’ favorite genre, although it doesn’t seem to differentiate between Western RPGs, JRPGs, tactical turn-based RPGs, or any number of other sub-genres. Action games are the second most popular, with strategy bringing up third place.
33% of the platform’s user base are aged between 18 and 25, and a further 32% are aged between 25 and 34. The 35-44 age group is pretty big, too, with 19% of users fitting into this bracket. 16% of users are aged 45 or over, showing that there’s a thriving market for older gamers.
