Despite a positive reception from critics, Take-Two’s CEO has said that Marvel’s Midnight Suns failed commercially, which could be due to its release window.
Firaxis’ turn-based superhero game, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, was positively received by critics and players alike, but Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick has said that it failed commercially.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns release window “wasn’t perfect”
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has reported that Strauss Zelnick believes that “it’s possible the release window wasn’t perfect” for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The game has failed to meet Take Two’s expectations commercially, despite the fact that it was positively received by critics. Looking at the Marvel’s Midnight Suns page here on TA, it’s clear that the players that have picked it up agree with the critics, as it’s currently rocking a 4.4/5-star rating. The game launched on Xbox Series X|S on December 2nd, which is always going to be a difficult month to launch a new game, due to the holidays, but to make things even more challenging, Marvel’s Midnight Suns shared a release date with Criterion’s latest game in its long-running franchise, Need for Speed Unbound, as well as The Callisto Protocol.
Just over a week after Marvel’s Midnight Suns launched, Squanch Games dropped High on Life, and while it hasn’t quite made it onto our list of best games on Game Pass, the comedy shooter stole the headlines for December. It’s clear to see that Zelnick’s concern that Firaxis’ game didn’t have the best release window is a valid point, but the Take-Two CEO does believe Marvel’s Midnight Suns will have a long tail, as has been seen with the studio’s previous games.
