The Fabled is a fantasy RPG that is part of the Web3 revolution in online gaming. 2023 looks set to be the year when these games move from simple farming, collecting and crafting games to full-throttle, open-world entertainment extravaganzas. With the launch of its alpha version on 27 December, The Fabled is taking a big step forward towards developing and releasing its full game. In order to get access to this current alpha, fans need to buy mintkeys or mintpasses, which will be their tickets to the platform. Keys and passes are both still available on secondary marketplaces for anyone to buy.

What is The Fabled?

The Fabled is a free-to-play action RPG set in a world where portals to the Abyss have been opened. As you guide your character through various levels, you will face a range of challenges and enemies. 

The Abyss is a mysterious and dangerous force that corrupts all it touches, and so far, no one has been able to discover who opened the portals or how they were created. However, brave heroes from all corners of the realm have ventured into the Abyss in search of answers.

The Fabled is built using the multichain aggregator Xenum by Octavian Studios, and the team has been building the game for over three years. If you’re into lore and questing, then this is the game for you. But you’ll need a high skill ceiling to achieve victory.

How do you play and win The Fabled?

There are two main ways to play the game: on foot and in the air:

• When on foot, players can choose from different character classes such as knights, mages, gods, and demons, and use a range of weapons like swords, bows, and magic to defeat enemies.
• Alternatively, players can ride a dragon mount and attack enemies from above by using the dragon’s breath attack, which is essentially a giant flamethrower.

In the game, you can collect rare weapons, artifacts, and level up your characters as you play. If you choose, you can mint these assets onto the blockchain using the ABYS token. Players can then trade, sell, buy, or rent them with other players.

By using the $ABYS token, you can also enhance the power of your characters by leveling them up and imbuing them with the power of The Abyss. Therefore ABYS also gives you the opportunity to monetize your time in the game.

What makes the game innovative?

Tokens

The Fabled uses two currencies to facilitate transactions: one on-chain and one off-chain:

The off-chain token is called Ashes, which players can earn by defeating enemies in the game. Ashes can be used to purchase soft-mint items and potions from in-game vendors. Ashes are subject to inflation and are “burned” upon use.

The on-chain currency is called ABYS, which allows players to hard-mint items onto the blockchain. ABYS may also be rewarded for defeating bosses and is the primary form of reward for renting, conjuration, and other marketplace transactions. ABYS can also be staked for periodic rewards.

NFTs

You can buy, sell, trade, create and rent digital assets with other players in The Fabled. To play the game, you must have at least one Fabled character. These characters have a range of appearances and belong to different classes.

There are three main classes:

Each main class has its own set of subclasses. Each character also has specific abilities and strengths that fit their design. For example, a Ranger character belonging to the Warrior subclass may have abilities that are particularly useful for archery.

It is up to the player to figure out which class fits their playstyle the best. As players progress through the Abyss, they will have the opportunity to level up their Fabled characters and improve their abilities.

Staking

Players can earn rewards by choosing to lock their ABYS tokens for a specific period of time through a process called staking. The longer and more tokens that are staked, the higher the reward tier a player will receive.

• Tier 1 – potions, food, other consumables.
• Tier 2 – rings, amulets and Tier 1.
• Tier 3 – weapons and everything above.
• Tier 4 – characters + Tiers 1-3.
• Tier 5 – land/creatures and everything in the previous tiers.

Renting

Renting allows more players to access The Fabled and share rewards by renting characters or items from guilds or other players. This feature allows you to try out different builds or weapons before making a purchase.

Platforms like Xenum enable players to add their assets to pools where they can be rented by other players for a certain period of time. Guilds can also contribute their assets to renting pools, making it easier for scholars and guilds to share rewards. 

Xenum’s interface allows guilds and other players to see the ranking of other renters, so the top earners are highlighted and guilds can tailor their asset pools to attract the best scholars and players. 

The reward distribution and cost of renting are determined by the community of renters and providers, creating an open and competitive market.

The Fabled alpha and mintkey

The Fabled’s alpha version launched on 27 December. Holders of their mintkey and mintpass are the only ones with access to play the game. This has resulted in a price spike for both of these items.

If we take a look at the secondary markets for The Fabled NFTs, we can see there was a big price spike on 21 December when the average sale price went above 0.6 ETH. On 24 December, the average sale price spiked again, when it went above 0.5 ETH.

While sales counts weren’t massive, the price rises do show The Fabled has a loyal following. Increased demand for mintkeys and mintpasses means lots of people want to play the alpha version of the game.

What’s on The Fabled’s roadmap?

The Fabled is currently in its alpha phase, where players can play a demo version of the game and the developers can identify bugs and issues. According to The Fabled’s own roadmap, they are currently in Phase 3.

As we can see, there are plenty more Phases in the roadmap so fans should expect a lot more from this game in 2023 and beyond.
