In an effort to improve the safety of younger players on Fortnite, Epic Games has introduced a brand-new type of account called Cabined Accounts.
However, many players may not understand the change, or appreciate the benefits it can bring, especially when it comes to protecting themselves online. Fortunately, we’re here to answer your questions.
What Are Cabined Accounts?
Cabined Accounts are a new type of account on Epic Games. They are specific to users under the age of 13 (or under their country’s age of digital consent).
The purpose of Cabined Accounts is to protect younger players from any potential dangers of playing online while giving parents more control over what their child can access.
This comes just shortly after the launch of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1, which introduced a new roster of Battle Pass characters for players to unlock, including the iconic Doom Slayer.
How Do Cabined Accounts Work in Fortnite?
Cabined Accounts allow users under the age of 13 (or under their country’s age of digital consent) to play Fortnite with limitations.
This includes the products they can purchase, the use of voice chat or text chat, and receiving promotional materials. These limitations can be altered or lifted entirely by a parent or guardian.
Here is everything that a Cabined Account restricts or removes in Fortnite and the Epic Games Store:
- Using voice chat or free text chat in-game
- Buying in-game items with real money
- Downloading games that are not owned or made by Epic themselves
- Getting recommended content based on past activity
- Receiving promotional marketing via email or push notification
- The ability to use their Epic Account to sign into other third-party websites, applications, or services.
- Choosing a custom display name
- Applying a SMS-based two-factor authentication to their account
When setting up a Cabined Account, Fortnite will ask the user to put an email from a parent or guardian. That parent or guardian will then follow a process to decide which features their child can access.
If the user does not put in an email or the parent or guardian does not complete this process, they will still be able to play Fortnite. However, every restriction will remain in place.
Why Is Fortnite Asking For My Age?
Since September 2022, Epic Games has started requesting Fortnite users who have not submitted their age to answer a one-time request about how old they are.
If you’re under 13, you’ll be given a Cabined Account. However, if you’re under 18 but over 13, some of your settings will change. This includes chat, parties, and the mature language filter.
The following changes will be made to users under the age of 18 but over 13 in Fortnite:
- The Chat setting will default to “Nobody” (meaning you can’t chat with anyone)
- Your profile details will default to “Hidden” (meaning no one can see your profile)
- The Parties setting will default to “Invite Only” (meaning you can only invite players to your party and can’t be joined by random players)
- Personalized recommendations will be turned off
- Additionally, if you are under 16, the mature language filter will default to on
