Dark Souls Remastered PC online features have finally been restored after almost ten months of, well, darkness. Unfortunately, that’s not going to come as much relief if you’re a Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition owner, as the servers for that game will remain offline forever.
Last month, Bandai Namco announced that Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition servers would not return, meaning that if you want to play Dark Souls online, you’re going to need to pick up Remastered. Thankfully, the servers for the newer version of the game are alive and well now, so you’re free to get ganked by invaders when you’re trying to deal with the Anor Londo archers.
Since the servers for Dark Souls 3 came back online in August, Dark Souls 2 is now the only game in the series whose servers remain offline. If you’ve got the Scholar of the First Sin version of that game, though, you can play online with no problem, so it’s just the base game that’s still down. We don’t yet know when we can expect the original Dark Souls 2 to come back online.
Servers for the Dark Souls series were originally taken down in January this year after the developers detected an RCE exploit that could potentially allow hackers to brick users’ machines or gain total control over them. It was subsequently confirmed that Dark Souls PC servers would remain dark after this year’s Elden Ring launch, but we’re now seeing them slowly blink back to life, which is good.
It’s worth noting that none of this affects online functionality in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or Elden Ring, nor does it have any impact on any of the Dark Souls games on consoles. If you’re hoping to return to Lordran right about now for a spot of demon-slaying, you’re safe whether it’s on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch.
