CHESHIRE \u2014 The Newington Nor\u2019Easters boys\u2019 basketball team picked up a much-needed victory on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, with their 68-51 victory over the Cheshire Rams. Following their victory, Newington head coach Scot Wenzel said it felt good to get back on the winning track, following their two close losses to Bloomfield and Windsor last week.
\u201cIt\u2019s good, we had two tough battles with Bloomfield and Windsor the last couple of games, so it\u2019s good to get a win,\u201d said Wenzel.
Looking to break a two-game losing streak, the Nor\u2019Easters were propelled by sophomore Josiah Sims, who had a monster 20-20 game as he scored 22 points and grabbed 22 rebounds.\u00a0
\u201cIt felt great to win,\u201d said Sims. \u201cThe team really came together and played great. It\u2019s nice to see the selflessness of my teammates as we built the lead and looked forward to keeping the momentum going.\u201d\u00a0
This was the second-straight game that Sims recorded a 20-20 double-double. He scored 27 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in the team\u2019s loss to Windsor last week. He said that being in the right position allows him to be able to be an effective player down low.
\u201cIt comes down to positioning,\u201d said Sims. \u201cCoach puts me in the right spot and I\u2019m able to get the ball. I am happy to do whatever the team needs to win.\u201d
Wenzel credited the young sophomore for being a force down low and being able to do a lot on both ends of the court.\u00a0
\u201cHe played very well for us, he was a monster on the board and did a lot for us,\u201d said Wenzel.
Newington took control of the game from the tip-off. They scored the most points of any quarter in the first, with a 25-point first quarter, leading the Rams 25-9. The Nor\u2019Easters added 15 more in the second quarter to give them a 40-20 lead at halftime.\u00a0
The Nor\u2019Easters held onto their comfortable lead the rest of the game. Entering the fourth quarter, they led Cheshire 58-32, resting some of their key players in the quarter.\u00a0
Newington had solid offensive performances from seniors LeBron Beckford and Avery Mickens. Beckford scored 19 points in the win and Mickens helped out, scoring 15.\u00a0
Up next for the Nor\u2019Easters are the Fitch Falcons, who\u2019s a tough team hailing from the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Wenzel said the team will work on mistakes made in Wednesday\u2019s game in preparation for Fitch.
\u201cWe need to fix some of the mistakes that we made and be ready on Saturday for Fitch,\u201d said Wenzel.\u00a0
