KIRKWOOD, Mo. \u2014 The sounds of the season filled Kirkwood today as the Pioneers<\/a> squared off with Webster Groves Statesmen<\/a> for the 116th edition of the Turkey Day game.
\u201cMost of the people I know, at least in Kirkwood, don\u2019t start eating until after this game,\u201d said Roger Stream.
Though the sights and sounds inside E. L. Lyons Memorial Stadium may be a bit different from your holiday tradition.
\u201cYou don\u2019t see much like this,\u201d said Kameron Richardson. \u201cIt\u2019s just amazing to watch.\u201d
For 116 years, Turkey Day has tied the communities of Kirkwood and Webster Groves together.
\u201cEverybody from all different graduation years come out to support the football team,\u201d said Richardson.
\u201cIt\u2019s the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi,\u201d said Stream.
\u201cWe\u2019ve come here for 22 years,\u201d said Shawn Owens. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve missed any of them.\u201d
For the past 44 years, referee Bart Castelli has had a front row seat to multiple underdog upsets.
\u201cTo have this atmosphere after 116 years and to work this type of game in these two communities, it\u2019s an honor for us to be out here,\u201d Castelli said.
As Castelli called his final game before hanging up his whistle and retiring from the game, he wouldn\u2019t allow the spotlight to be shined anywhere other than on the players on the field.
\u201cI just cannot say anything more about the coaches I\u2019ve worked for and the kids that I\u2019ve officiated,\u201d said Castelli.  \u201cIt\u2019s all about them.\u201d
Castelli walked off the field for the last time with the sounds of the Frisco Bell ringing behind him.
\u201cWe don\u2019t play unless we\u2019ve got guys like that,\u201d said Kirkwood head coach Jeremy Maclin. \u201cI remember him reffing some of my games in high school.  I got a chance to talk to him and thank him for what he\u2019s done.”
Kirkwood will be keeping the Frisco Bell for another year thanks to a 65-13 win. The Pioneers have now won 10 straight Turkey Day games.
