  Destiny 2 developer Bungie, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/31\/sony-announces-its-acquiring-bungie-for-36-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which was acquired by PlayStation last year for $3.6 billion<\/a>, is the latest game maker to be hit with layoffs in 2023. Various former Bungie employees announced on Twitter today they had been laid off, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-10-30\/innovent-drug-continues-to-take-weight-off-in-48-week-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;has confirmed with its sources that an undisclosed number of staff were laid off today.&nbsp;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
Bloomberg\u00a0<\/em>reports that Bungie CEO Pete Parsons told staffers they\u2019d be \u201chearing some news today\u201d and that following it, there would be a team meeting later today to \u201cdiscuss today\u2019s events.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
As for why employees were laid off, that remains unclear, especially as the company is set to release a massive Destiny 2 expansion \u2013 The Final Shape \u2013 that\u2019s set to end the decade-long saga that began in the first Destiny game.\u00a0Bloomberg<\/em>\u00a0states that\u00a0its sources say\u00a0The Final Shape has been delayed internally to June 2024, months after its previously announced February 27, 2024 release date.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Game Informer\u00a0<\/em>has reached out to PlayStation and will update this story if it learns more.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In January of 2022, Sony announced it was acquiring Bungie for $3.6 billion; it completed the purchase in July of 2022.\u00a0These layoffs come less than two years after the purchase.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These Bungie layoffs join an unfortunately ever-growing list of layoffs affecting the studios behind games released in 2023, which by all accounts, is one of the best years in gaming in terms of releases. In January,\u00a0Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees\u00a0amidst its\u00a0ongoing $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which\u00a0it completed earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In August, Striking Distance Studios, the team behind last year\u2019s\u00a0The Callisto Protocol, laid off\u00a0more than 30 employees, and that same month, Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer\u00a0BioWare laid off 50 employees, including long-time studio veterans. The following month, in September,\u00a0Immortals of Aveum\u00a0developer\u00a0Ascendant Studios laid off roughly 45% of its staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Just this month, The Last of Us developer\u00a0Naughty Dog has laid off at least 25 employees,\u00a0and\u00a0Telltale Games has gone through layoffs\u00a0as well, although an actual number of laid-off employees has not yet been revealed. \u00a0And last week, Dreams developer Media Molecule laid off 20 employees.\u00a0<\/p>\n
