Lucky for you, we\u2019re going to show you how to easily get your Raspberry Pi set up for using RetroPie and lr-fceumm for playing some fun retro games on the big screen without needing the original Nintendo Entertainment System console.<\/p>\n<p>After you finish this guide, be sure to check out our other guide for how to set up the RetroArch NES Core Mesen.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_To_Setup_RetroPie_for_NES\"><strong>How To Setup RetroPie for NES?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"What_Youll_Need\"><strong>What You\u2019ll Need<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you don\u2019t have one yet, you\u2019ll need your own Raspberry Pi device \u2013 you\u2019ll obviously need one in order to finish this tutorial and you can grab a Raspberry Pi 4 here off of Amazon for around $100<\/li>\n<li>Also, go ahead and download RetroPie from the official website here<\/li>\n<li>If you plan to download the required files and ROMs on your Raspberry Pi, you\u2019ll also need a keyboard and mouse to use with it<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to get your NES ROMs ready to play games (keep in mind that the lr-fceumm emulator accepts the following file extensions: <strong>.7z, .fds, .nes, and .zip<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll also need to have a controller and we recommend you go with the 8Bitdo SN30 Pro<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"\/>\n<ul>\n<li>If at any time you\u2019d like to consult the official RetroPie docs, you can do so on their website here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Setup_Your_Raspberry_Pi\"><strong>1. Setup Your Raspberry Pi<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Luckily, the best NES emulator comes as the default emulator for RetroPie so there\u2019s not much extra work you need to do to install it aside from downloading and installing RetroPie itself.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/0be84613-5a15-4893-baaf-27fef801b79d.png\" alt=\"Manually install lr-mgba\" class=\"wp-image-3021 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/0be84613-5a15-4893-baaf-27fef801b79d.png 711w, https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/0be84613-5a15-4893-baaf-27fef801b79d-500x282.png 500w, https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/0be84613-5a15-4893-baaf-27fef801b79d-20x11.png 20w, https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/0be84613-5a15-4893-baaf-27fef801b79d-385x217.png 385w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\"\/><figcaption>Manually install lr-fceumm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re using an older version of RetroPie that didn\u2019t come with lr-fceumm preinstalled, you can easily get it by doing the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In RetroPie settings, head to <strong>RetroPie Setup<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Next, go to <strong>Manage packages <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Manage main packages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Go down and then choose <strong>lr-fceumm<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After that, choose <strong>Install from pre-compiled binary<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Let RetroPie download the lr-fceumm emulator and once it finishes, you can go back through the menu and choose <strong>Exit<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Put_Your_NES_Roms_Onto_Your_RetroPie\"><strong>2. Put Your NES Roms Onto Your RetroPie<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll now be moving our NES ROMs onto RetroPie.<\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"Move_ROM_Files_Using_Your_Raspberry_Pi\"><strong>Move ROM Files Using Your Raspberry Pi<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to have the <strong>Pixel desktop environment<\/strong> tool installed on your Raspberry Pi to be able to access <strong>desktop mode<\/strong> on it. We\u2019ll now be covering how to get this setup.<\/p>\n<p>Head to the RetroPie options menu and then go ahead and go to <strong>RetroPie Setup<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Configuration \/ Tools<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Raspbian Tools<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Install Pixel desktop environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ff4ad24d-f945-4d86-adbc-01c6908905fd-1.png\" alt=\"Pixel desktop environment\" class=\"wp-image-3022 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ff4ad24d-f945-4d86-adbc-01c6908905fd-1.png 709w, https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ff4ad24d-f945-4d86-adbc-01c6908905fd-1-500x281.png 500w, https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ff4ad24d-f945-4d86-adbc-01c6908905fd-1-20x11.png 20w, https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ff4ad24d-f945-4d86-adbc-01c6908905fd-1-385x216.png 385w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\"\/><figcaption>Pixel desktop environment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After you have successfully installed the Pixel desktop environment on your Raspberry Pi, go ahead and restart the device. After restarting, you should now be able to access desktop mode by going to <strong>Ports <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Desktop.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The desktop environment allows you to navigate the files on your Raspberry Pi similarly to how you would on a Windows computer.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve installed the desktop environment, we\u2019ll need to move our NES ROM(s) to the proper folder on our Raspberry Pi:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\/home\/pi\/RetroPie\/roms\/nes\/<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span id=\"Remote_Access_Your_Raspberry_Pi_From_Your_PC\"><strong>Remote Access Your Raspberry Pi From Your PC<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The easiest way to get files from your PC computer to your Raspberry Pi is by remotely accessing the Pi from your PC. To do this, you\u2019ll first want to make sure that your Raspberry Pi is connected to the same network as your PC.<\/p>\n<p>First, make sure your Pi is connected to your WiFi or to your\u00a0network\u00a0router directly using an\u00a0ethernet\u00a0cable.<\/p>\n<p>Open up the Windows file explorer on your PC and type <strong>\\\\retropie<\/strong> into the address bar at the top. After waiting for a few minutes, your Raspberry Pi should appear. If it doesn\u2019t appear, there are a few additional steps we\u2019ll need to take. If yours does appear, you can go ahead and skip to directly below the <strong>Remote Access<\/strong> screenshot shown down below.<\/p>\n<p>On your Raspberry Pi, open the terminal window and type in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get install xrdp<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This command will now begin to install the remote desktop\u00a0server.<\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019ll need to figure out the\u00a0IP address\u00a0of your Raspberry Pi. To do this type, you\u2019ll want to use the following command:<\/p>\n<p>Make a note of your Raspberry Pi\u2019s IP address because we will need to use this soon in order to connect to it remotely. You\u2019ll also need your Pi\u2019s\u00a0username\u00a0and\u00a0password.<\/p>\n<p>Now on your PC, go ahead and open the remote desktop app by typing <strong>remote desktop<\/strong> into the Windows search bar in the bottom left. Click <strong>remote desktop connection<\/strong> to use the remote desktop app.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/78bbe1d9-d904-4cf8-bdfb-f32cf836365b.png\" alt=\"Remote desktop class=\" lazyload=\"\" connection=\"\"\/><figcaption>Remote desktop connection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Search for and select Remote Desktop Connection on your PC<\/p>\n<p>In the Remote Desktop Connection window that pops up, you\u2019ll now want to enter the IP address of your Raspberry Pi that you got earlier. After clicking connect, login using your Raspberry Pi\u2019s username and password.<\/p>\n<p>If everything went correctly, you should now be able to remotely access your Raspberry Pi from your PC. To double-check that you are able to access your Raspberry Pi remotely, open up Windows File Explorer and type <strong>\\\\retropie<\/strong> into the address bar. You should see your Retropie files appear.<\/p>\n<p>Whether your Raspberry Pi appeared automatically or you needed to do the additional steps, now we\u2019re moving on to the final parts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/switcher.gg\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jnMI4YJ-1.png\" alt=\"Remote class=\" lazyload=\"\" access=\"\"\/><figcaption>Remote access<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Remember earlier, we mentioned that we would need to copy our NES ROMs from our PC to this directory on our Raspberry Pi:<\/p>\n<p>Navigate to <strong>roms<\/strong> &gt; <strong>nes<\/strong> and copy your NES ROMs files from your PC to this folder in your Raspberry Pi. After you\u2019ve copied your ROMs over, restart your Raspberry Pi and the games should now appear as expected.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Play_Your_NES_Games\"><strong>3. Play Your NES Games<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now that your Raspberry Pi has been restarted and is all set up and ready to go, you can boot up EmulationStation and once you highlight Game Boy Advance, it should show you at the bottom how many games are available to be played for it.
