The Super Mario Bros. Movie <\/em>is out in theaters now, and for those of you who didn\u2019t care for what you heard of Chris Pratt\u2019s Mario voice<\/span> in the trailers, well, it is pretty much like that throughout most of the movie. However, there is one scene at the beginning that serves as a bit of a meta moment about this, acknowledging Pratt\u2019s performance and the lack of Mario\u2019s distinct, exaggerated Italian accent.<\/p>\n

The movie opens with the scene of Bowser defeating the kingdom of Penguins that\u2019s been featured heavily in the movie\u2019s trailers<\/span>. Following this, the movie cuts to Brooklyn, New York, where Mario and Luigi are starting their new, family-owned plumbing business called\u2014you guessed it\u2014Super Mario Bros. The movie then shows the duo\u2019s commercial that premiered as the movie\u2019s Super Bowl ad<\/span>, but with the two giving a sales pitch at the end where both brothers lean hard into the Italian accents we typically associate with the characters.<\/p>\n

The scene then pans out to Mario and Luigi watching the commercial at a pizzeria, and they both sound like, well, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day. They\u2019ve apparently sunk all of their money into this new ad, so there\u2019s a lot riding on it, and Mario wonders aloud if the accents are too much. It\u2019s here that the brothers are tapped by a patron playing a Donkey Kong<\/em> arcade machine (though it\u2019s rebranded as Jump Man<\/em>, the original name for Mario in his 1981 debut game) named Giuseppe, who says, \u201cToo much? It\u2019s-a perfect, wahoo!\u201d <\/p>\n

If that voice sounded at all familiar to you, it\u2019s because Giuseppe here is played by Charles Martinet, the voice actor behind Mario and Luigi in the video games. There\u2019s been a lot of dissent around The Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/em>\u2019s casting, as it seemed to prioritize getting big-name Hollywood actors over seasoned voice talent, to middling results. So Martinet getting both this very minor role that serves as an ode to Mario\u2019s voice as we\u2019ve known it for nearly the past 30 years, and also a more substantial part as Mario and Luigi\u2019s father, feels like a respectful nod to the man who\u2019s been voicing these characters for decades.<\/p>\n
