Atomic Heart<\/em>\u2019s first hurdle is a tutorial. Whatever struggles you\u2019re having while learning how to use the scanner, know that it\u2019s not a bug (probably). <\/p>\n

You\u2019d be forgiven for getting stumped right at the start of this first-person shooter, out now for PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows PC.<\/p>\n

How to use the scanner in the Atomic Heart tutorial<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To use the scanner in Atomic Heart<\/em>, just double-tap R1 on PlayStation (or RB on Xbox), then keep holding R1 \/ RB after the second press<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The written directions (\u201cHold R1 + R1\u201d on PlayStation) read like the sort of tip where you\u2019re supposed to press two different buttons, and the NPC \u2014 who exists solely to justify the tutorial within the game\u2019s tenuous fiction \u2014 tells you something to effect of \u201cholding both of your hands up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given the general bugginess of Atomic Heart<\/em>, no one would blame you for assuming the text instruction is in error, or for repeatedly trying to hold down L1 and R1 at the same time instead \u2014 one shoulder button for each hand. (This writer is guilty as charged.)<\/p>\n

Atomic Heart<\/em>\u2019s scanner works a lot like most scanners work from most games: It helps you analyze your surroundings. When scanning, objects will show up highlighted in overlays of various colors, which the game does not explain:<\/p>\n

\n
• \nBlue<\/strong> indicates chests, drawers, and other containers that have resources you can loot.<\/li>\n
• \nOrange<\/strong> indicates enemies. If you hold the scanner over a specific enemy, you\u2019ll be able to see a list of their resistances and weaknesses, plus a rundown of the loot they\u2019ll drop when defeated. Note that using the scanner doesn\u2019t pause time entirely; you\u2019re still susceptible to attacks.<\/li>\n
• \nWhite<\/strong> indicates objects you can interact with \u2014 save stations, elevator call buttons, that sort of thing.<\/li>\n
• \nPurple<\/strong> indicates story-essential items. For the most part, Atomic Heart<\/em> is pretty generous with its waypointing, but in some rare cases, you have to do the work yourself. For instance, during the \u201cMade in the USSR\u201d mission, you have to find the \u201cvoice, the symbol, and the sprout of the Motherland.\u201d Activating the scanner will highlight the three items \u2014 a radio, a hammer, and a plant \u2014 you need to progress. They\u2019re all in the same room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
