In what may come as a surprising bit of news, Gearbox has announced on Twitter<\/a> that it now owns the\u00a0Risk of Rain\u00a0<\/em>IP. This means that Gearbox will take the reins of development on Risk of Rain 2\u00a0<\/em>content as well as any future projects related to the franchise.<\/p>\n

According to Gearbox\u2019s statement, the company holds \u201ca deep love and respect for the IP\u201d and feels \u201ceager to prove\u201d itself by providing worthy content for the series. Currently, Gearbox is working on porting the Survivors of the Void DLC of Risk of Rain 2\u00a0<\/em>to modern consoles. Hopoo Games, the original developer of\u00a0Risk of Rain<\/em>, retweeted the statement<\/a> and expressed that this will come as great news for fans. When responding to another user, Hopoo Games clarified<\/a> that the studio will remain independent.<\/p>\n

Fans initially expressed concern over this news, wondering if this means that Hopoo Games will no longer work on\u00a0Risk of Rain 2<\/em>. Indeed, on the official\u00a0Risk of Rain 2 <\/em>Discord server, community manager Jonathan Cheetham, also known as SeventeenUncles, confirmed that Hopoo Games will not participate<\/a> in the development of new Risk of Rain 2\u00a0<\/em>content or any other installments in the series moving forward. Although this will inevitably disappoint some fans, Cheetham reassured that the people who work at\u00a0Gearbox\u00a0<\/em>genuinely love the\u00a0Risk of\u00a0<\/em>Rain<\/em> games and understand their core appeal.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he stated that if Gearbox did not acquire\u00a0Risk of Rain<\/em>, then Hopoo Games would have likely \u201csat on the IP\u201d without making any more content for it. With this in mind, Cheetham feels that fans should consider this news a positive development.<\/p>\n

Notably, Gearbox\u2019s statement also mentioned that it currently has \u201ca very special passion project\u201d in development with Hopoo Games that will serve as \u201ca true love letter to the community.\u201d Given what Cheetham has already stated about Hopoo\u2019s future involvement with Risk of Rain<\/em>, it seems that this project will not directly involve the IP even though Gearbox said it would appeal to the\u00a0Risk of Rain\u00a0<\/em>community specifically. Alternatively, this project may not be a game per se, but still pay tribute to the series in some way.
