  The first Gear of War game was released 16 years ago today, and Netflix is celebrating by announcing plans to adapt the series into both a live-action film and an adult animated series.&nbsp;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The streaming giant revealed the news in a tweet that\u2019s\u00a0light on details but states\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0partnering with Gears developer The Coalition. Based on the tweet\u2019s wording, it sounds like the animated show will come after the movie\u2019s release. It may not stop there, as Netflix also says\u00a0there\u2019s \u201cpotential for more stories to follow!\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear if Netflix\u2019s project is different from the Gears film announced in 2016 or if they\u2019re now one and the same. That movie has been quietly floating around for years, with screenwriter F. Scott Frazier (xXx: Return of Xander Cage<\/em>) joining in 2018. Producer Dylan Clark, who\u2019s also attached and recently worked on The Batman<\/em>, provided an update in March, teasing a new announcement \u201cvery soon.\u201d If this is the news Clark alluded to, \u201cvery soon\u201d is quite the stretch, but we\u2019ll see if Netflix confirms it has taken over production or is making its own adaptation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In terms of potential cast, Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>\u00a0actor\u00a0Dave Bautista has publicly petitioned to play Marcus Fenix on several occasions; the closest he\u2019s come is appearing as himself in Fenix\u2019s armor\u00a0as a skin in Gears 5. Given that Bautista is now 53, it\u2019s probably\u00a0now or never to pull the trigger on that dream casting unless they go with the older Fenix of the recent games.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These\u00a0projects join\u00a0the pile of video game adaptations Netflix has in production. A Bioshock movie is in the works, as well as numerous TV series, including\u00a0Sonic Prime<\/em>, a second\u00a0season of The Cuphead Show<\/em>, and\u00a0The Witcher<\/em> (renewed for Seasons 3 and 4 with Liam Hemsworth starring in the latter). Netflix has also become a game publisher, acquiring a number of studios such as Oxenfree developer Night School and, most recently,\u00a0Spryfox (Cozy Grove) to release games under its banner.<\/p>\n
