Mermaid\u2019s Grotto, Okinawa<\/figcaption>Screenshot: Google<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\nIn July, the world learned of the sad passing of Kazuki Takahashi<\/span>, the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh!<\/em> At the time his death was recorded by officials as a drowning, but a recent report from the US military\u2019s newspaper has provided some extra details not known at the time, regarding his heroism at the time.<\/p>\nA story on Stars & Stripes<\/em><\/span>, the Department of Defence\u2019s own news service, reports\u00a0that a \u201cU.S. Army officer [has been] recognized for rescuing three people from a riptide at a popular Okinawa dive spot in an episode that apparently killed a well-known Japanese manga artist.\u201d<\/p>\nThe officer, 49 year-old Major Robert Bourgeau, has been recommended for a Soldier\u2019s Medal for his actions on July 4, which took place at Mermaid\u2019s Grotto in the village of Onna, Okinawa. Bourgeau reportedly spotted three swimmers\u2014two Japanese civilians and a fellow US soldier\u2014struggling in a dangerous riptide, and while \u201cstill wearing his running shoes\u201d raced out to rescue them.<\/p>\n
The S&S<\/em> report\u00a0says that while the riptide alone was dangerous enough, six-foot waves were also crashing amongst it, and quickly caused a whirlpool effect, which began sucking in the stranded swimmers.<\/p>\nBourgeau\u2014a trained scuba diving instructor\u2014was able to bring both civilians to shore, and then direct the US soldier to safety as well. During the rescue, however, \u201cseveral sworn witness statements provided by the Army\u201d say Takahashi also jumped in to help, but onlookers only \u201ccaught glimpses of him until he disappeared beneath the waves.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a hero\u201d, Bourgeau told Stars & Stripes<\/em>. \u201cHe died trying to save someone else.\u201d<\/p>\nTakahashi\u2019s body was found by the Japanese Coast Guard the next day floating off the coast of Nago, a city in the northern part of Okinawa. His car was later discovered parked at Mermaid\u2019s Grotto. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
