Me writing a lede while preoccupied with lunch. And a speedrunner blitzing through Super Mario Bros<\/em>., setting a new time to beat in Nintendo\u2019s all-time-classic side-scroller.<\/p>\n

Yes, the preeminent Mario<\/em> speedrunner Niftski clocked a sub-five-minute run this weekend, shattering the existing world record by less than a second. The \u201cany%\u201d playthrough\u2014that term means it\u2019s totally cool to skip sections of the game\u2014came in at an impressive 4:54.798.<\/p>\n

Niftski, who streams on Twitch<\/span> and YouTube<\/span>, has picked up a following for completing all sorts of speedrunning feats in Super Mario Bros.<\/em>, and is also responsible for the game\u2019s previous world record of 4:54.881, set last winter. This latest run shaves a grand total of five frames off Niftski\u2019s previous run\u2014that\u2019s<\/em> the level of precision we\u2019re talking about here. It is truly bonkers.
