Review aggregation sites are hardly the arbiter of a game\u2019s quality, particularly when it comes to user reviews, and particularly<\/em> in the era of review-bombing. Still, some data points are unignorable: As noted by VGC<\/em><\/span>, Blizzard\u2019s recent Diablo Immortal<\/em> now holds claim to the lowest user score on Metacritic.<\/p>\n
First released this month for PC and mobile devices, Diablo Immortal<\/em> is a free-to-play iteration on Blizzard\u2019s genre-defining series of fantasy loot games. Though I haven\u2019t played, my colleagues say it\u2019s actually pretty good<\/span>, if you\u2019re able to ignore all of the bullshit that tends to come with the earning model. The core gameplay loop is a blast, they say<\/span>, and the production values are through the roof.<\/p>\n
It seems that many players, however, are unable to look past that stuff. As of this writing, Diablo Immortal<\/em>\u2019s PC version is the 4,887th highest rated game, per user reviews<\/span>, on Metacritic\u2014putting it squarely at the bottom of the list. It\u2019s directly behind Warcraft III: Reforged<\/em> (0.6) and the infamously maligned Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition<\/em> (0.6). Of the roughly 2,500 user reviews<\/span> for Diablo Immortal<\/em> on PC, around 2,475 are negative. (The iOS version sports a 0.5 rating. Metacritic does not appear to list any user reviews for the Android version.)<\/p>\n\n
Most of the criticism is leveraged directly at Immortal<\/em>\u2019s microtransactions. \u201cThe microtransactions are so bad and make the game so trash I actually created an account to give it a zero,\u201d one person wrote. \u201cThis game is just masked gambling machine for kids,\u201d wrote another. Another likened it to \u201cpsychological warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n

User reviews are often a scourge, with many<\/span> games<\/span> weathering<\/span> unfair<\/span> campaigns<\/span> over bad-faith \u201cissues,\u201d but plenty of reports indicate Diablo Immortal<\/em>\u2019s microtransactions are indeed exploitative, even in comparison to other games guilty of similarly underhanded practices. One streamer spent $6,000 on microtransactions<\/span>, ultimately failing to turn up any<\/em> high-tiered gear. There\u2019s also the well-publicized claim<\/span> that it takes more than $100,000 to fully level up a character in the game (though that math seems\u2026dubious). The game\u2019s internal purchases are in part why it\u2019s not available in countries<\/span> with strict anti-loot-box laws, like Belgium and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
The point seems clear: Diablo<\/em> fans want microtransactions far, far away from their Diablo<\/em>. Good thing Blizzard recently clarified that next year\u2019s Diablo IV<\/em> will be a premium-priced game<\/span>, therefore absent all the (extremely penny-pinching) bells and whistles that punted Diablo Immortal<\/em> to the very bottom of Metacritic\u2019s list.<\/p>\n
