I\u2019m not surprised that Fortnite <\/em>crypto exists. Whether it\u2019s Nintendo<\/span> or Minecraft<\/em><\/span> NFTs, crypto scammers love to make environment-destroying projects out of other people\u2019s IPs. What\u2019s surprising is that Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney bothered to give the Fortnite Tokens project his time of day. \u201cThis is a scam,\u201d he tweeted<\/a><\/span> at the account yesterday. (h\/t: PC Gamer<\/em><\/a><\/span>)<\/p>\n

The creators claim that the cryptocurrency is \u201ca fair-launch, community-driven, Fortnite game fans-created cryptocurrency project with no specified owner or company structure behind it or a CEO deciding on its future.\u201d Presumably, the last part means that they don\u2019t think that anyone can be held legally responsible for Fortnite Tokens. Sweeney disagreed. \u201cThat\u2019s not how trademarks and copyrights work though,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou can\u2019t use the Fortnite <\/em>name and images without permission to market an unrelated product.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortnite Tokens use the Fortnite<\/em> logo, but that seems to be where the similarities with Epic\u2019s popular battle royale end. Even their collection of generic-looking non-fungible tokens don\u2019t have anything to do with Fortnite<\/em>. So why did the creator go through the trouble of copyright infringement? According to their crypto page<\/span>, they did it for the \u201cviral growth from our good \u2018ole fashion memes.\u201d <\/p>\n

Hopefully, he can meme his way out of a potential lawsuit. Sweeney was not impressed, and tweeted that he would have Epic\u2019s lawyers look into the tokens. While it doesn\u2019t seem that a lawsuit is pending yet, Fortnite Tokens was removed from Telegram<\/a><\/span> following a complaint from Epic Games. Epic did not return a request for comment by the time of publication.<\/p>\n
