Let\u2019s cast our minds back to January, when I wrote a story called \u2018Crypto Losers Buy Copy Of Jodorowsky\u2019s Dune, Have Played Themselves\u2019<\/span>, a piece which I thought at the time perfectly captured the extent to which brainworms had infested the blockchain community.<\/p>\n

To recap, a group of people known as a DAO (more on those here<\/span>) bought one of the surviving copies of Jodorowsky\u2019s Dune<\/em>, a production bible for a failed 1970s Hollywood adaptation of Dune <\/em>that was made famous by the 2013 documentary Jodorowsky\u2019s Dune<\/em>. Knowing way more about crypto scams than copyright law, they thought they\u2019d be able to do all kinds of stuff with the material within, never once stopping to consider that buying a book doesn\u2019t give you the rights to what\u2019s inside it, or that it\u2019s only one of a number of surviving copies, not the last\/only one. <\/p>\n

We hadn\u2019t heard much on the project since, until the weekend when one of the DAO\u2019s co-founders, Charlie\/Charlotte Fang\u2014who is also helping run an NFT project called Milady\u2014was accused of posting some truly <\/em>reprehensible shit online.<\/p>\n

Most of the allegations are contained in this comprehensive Twitter thread by 0xngmi<\/a><\/span>, where the poster known as \u2018Miya\u2019 compares black people to apes, calls homosexuality a \u2018disease\u2019 and says a nation can be \u2018saved\u2019 by killing its Jews. It\u2019s also alleged that \u2018Miya\u2019 was involved with the Systemspace community, a group that has been labelled a \u2018suicide cult\u2019<\/span> promising a \u2018cyberpunk afterlife\u2019<\/span>, which was linked to the death of a 17 year-old in 2017<\/span>. \u2018Miya\u2019 is also accused of being involved in the grooming of anorexic girls on social media. <\/p>\n

Fang has since confessed to being \u2018Miya\u2019 in a series of Twitter posts (though it\u2019s important to note they don\u2019t address specific allegations, so it\u2019s unclear which were actually them or not), in which they say their disgusting posts and behaviour was them simply \u2018trolling\u2019 and being \u2018juvenile\u2019, and that their \u2018real views hold no room for hate\u2019. They have nevertheless announced they are stepping down from their role with the Milady NFT project, though their status with the Dune <\/em>group remains unclear (Kotaku <\/em>has reached out for clarification on this). <\/p>\n
