Sony has apparently registered a new PS5 model<\/strong> in Japan \u2013 the console\u2019s second revision since launch. As spotted by Twitter user Renka_Schedule (via VGC), the company received the greenlight from\u00a0Japan\u2019s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in April 2022 to begin producing\u00a0new \u2018CFI-1200\u2019 series consoles.<\/p>\n

VGC reports that the new PS5 model features updated\u00a0radio and wireless communications equipment, hence requiring design certification from the ministry. The launch models use\u00a0CFI-1XXX scheme whereas 2021\u2019s revised models followed the\u00a0CFI-11XX scheme.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s revision revolved around the console\u2019s heatsink, which ended up causing quite a stir when popular tech YouTuber Austin Evans theorized that it made the console worse. Evans\u2019 assessment was merely based on the size of the heatsink, which had been reduced, and wasn\u2019t based on any kind of extensive testing. Following days of hoopla, the trusty folks over at Digital Foundry tested the new model and concluded that there was no noticeable performance difference between the two models. Other tech YouTubers found that the revised PS5 actually ran cooler.\u00a0These console revisions are par for the course and are ultimately aimed at improving and simplifying system design as opposed to making things worse.<\/p>\n

This new PS5 model might be the redesign that was rumored last May. However, a new report claims that Sony is looking to begin producing an upgraded PS5 with an\u00a0AMD-designed system-on-chip (SoC). It\u2019s too early to say if a mid-gen upgrade is on the way or if Sony\u2019s merely looking to circumvent ongoing component supply shortages.<\/p>\n
