While it doesn\u2019t usurp Pok\u00e9mon Brilliant Diamond <\/em>and Shining Pearl<\/em>\u2019s combined sales figure of 14.65 million, it\u2019s nevertheless impressive for an original title that deviated so far from every mainline game in the series. <\/p>\nLegends <\/em>is currently sitting at number fifteen on the VGChartz<\/span> list, directly under HeartGold <\/em>and SoulSilver<\/em>. It\u2019s also sitting above Crystal<\/em>, Emerald<\/em>, Platinum<\/em>, and both<\/em> FireRed<\/em> and LeafGreen<\/em>. Whether you think that Legends <\/em>is a quirky experiment or a main Pok\u00e9mon <\/em>game, the sales figures solidly establish the open world monster-catcher as a giant among the classics.<\/p>\nThe rankings are especially wild when you consider how much controversy the game initially generated. Before Legends<\/em> was released on January 28, fans weren\u2019t sure about the unusually aggressive monsters that would attack humans<\/span> on sight or the ugly trees<\/span> that they saw in the official trailers. Once players could experience the game for themselves, they wouldn\u2019t stop arguing about its low graphical fidelity<\/span>. <\/p>\nDespite the criticism, Legends <\/em>was the fresh and exciting title that the Pok<\/em>\u00e9mon <\/em>series really needed this year. The plot was fascinatingly dark<\/span>, the giant Pok\u00e9mon were novel<\/span>, and even ordinary creatures had a lot<\/span> more personality<\/span> than players were used to from the series. In contrast, Brilliant Diamond<\/em> and Shining Pearl<\/em> are barebone remakes<\/span> of a game that was released fifteen years ago. At the time, critics panned it<\/span> for playing too safe to the usual formula. Legends<\/em> showed that Nintendo didn\u2019t have to choose between tradition and innovation.<\/p>\nLegends<\/em> let down hardcore fans in some ways. But it proved that engrossing gameplay and big IPs can lead to record-breaking sales, even if it\u2019s not the prettiest or resource-intensive game in the series. This seems to be Nintendo\u2019s approach to their other first-party games. Fans groused about how Nintendo took almost eight years to release new Mario Kart 8 <\/em>maps after the game\u2019s initial release. Many of these maps were visual downgrades compared to the original. It didn\u2019t matter. According to the report, Mario Kart 8<\/em> sold almost 10 million copies<\/span> last year. <\/p>\nNintendo can afford to publish creatively off-the-path and ugly games, and fans will buy millions of copies anyway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
