I know licensing isn\u2019t the sexiest <\/em>topic, but when it comes to certain properties\u2014like Star Wars<\/em> and major sports\u2014it plays a super important role in what games we get to play and who makes them. Which is my way of explaining why I\u2019m writing about the surprise announcement that EA is making its first Lord of the Rings<\/em> game since 2006.<\/p>\n

For all the shit people talk about EA in 2022, most of it for good reason, the publisher had a run in the 00’s where they released a number of excellent Lord of the Rings <\/em>games<\/span>, like the brawler movie tie-ins, the cult Battle for Middle Earth<\/em> series of strategy games and Third Age<\/em>, a Final Fantasy<\/em> clone that is a lot <\/em>better than most people ever gave it credit for.<\/p>\n

So there\u2019s a weird sense of nostalgia attached to the announcement today that, with the series\u2019 rights now under new management<\/span>, EA is making a new Lord of the Rings<\/em> game. That\u2019s the good news. The bad news is that it\u2019s a free to play mobile game. The good news\u2014pardon me, but this is a rollercoaster of an announcement\u2014is that it\u2019s based on one of the best types of free-to-play games around. <\/p>\n

Called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth<\/em>, here\u2019s the game\u2019s official description:<\/p>\n

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth<\/em> will feature immersive storytelling, turn-based combat, deep collection systems, and a wide roster of characters from across the vast universe of The Lord of the Rings<\/em> and The Hobbit<\/em>. Players battle through iconic stories from the world of Tolkien and take up the fight against the great evils of Middle-earth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Basically, it\u2019s going to be Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes<\/em><\/span>\u2014it\u2019s even being developed by the same team, Capital Games\u2014only swapping out Jedi for Rohirrim and Hobbits. Which, you know, is not as cool an announcement as EA saying \u201chey, we\u2019re making Battle for Middle Earth III<\/em>\u201d, but for anyone who is into GoH\u2019s<\/em> casual daily battles, this might be neat.<\/p>\n

And maybe Battle for Middle Earth III<\/em> can come next. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
