Image: Square Enix \/ Amiibolad \/ Kotaku<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\nA new Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/em><\/span> mod gives party member Barret Wallace an updated aesthetic<\/span> that hews closer to the pre-development concept art created by famed illustrator Yoshitaka Amano.<\/p>\nAlthough Amano\u2019s paintings are known for imbuing the iconic role-playing series with a touch of ethereal elegance, his remarkable artwork is rarely mirrored within the Final Fantasy<\/em> games themselves. That\u2019s not to say the franchise doesn\u2019t contain beautiful imagery, but it hardly looks like Amano\u2019s one-of-a-kind illustrations.<\/p>\n\u201cI feel like what I add to the franchise is my approach differs from a game developer\u2019s approach,\u201d Amano told Polygon<\/em> during a 2017 retrospective<\/span> on the original Final Fantasy VII<\/em>. \u201cAnd I think that gives the art more leeway\u2014it isn\u2019t limited to something that would fit into a game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/p>\n\n

Not only is it inspired by Amano\u2019s largely unrealized concept art, but it also focuses on Barret, who sports the kind of larger frame that doesn\u2019t get much play in the artist\u2019s portfolio due to his focus on more waif-like character designs.<\/p>\nIn fact, while poring over Amano\u2019s early Final Fantasy VII<\/em> concepts, I could only find one that features Cloud\u2019s gun-armed ally, which naturally made developing the mod a tricky exercise.<\/p>\n\u201c[T]here isn\u2019t a lot of art to use as a reference, so I kept all the parts that are visible: ponytail, fur trim, earrings, and facial piercings,\u201d wrote mod creator Amiibolad in its Nexus Mods description. \u201cThe rest is my interpretation of Amano\u2019s free form shapes and patterns, and of course: BEADS!\u201d<\/p>\n
Amiibolad, who Kotaku<\/em> previously highlighted for their work on an ambitious Breath of the Wild<\/em> project<\/span>, included a handful of variations with the Barret mod that gives players different color palettes for the new outfit.<\/p>\nWith this release, Amiibolad\u2019s mod work now includes Amano-inspired outfits for every playable<\/span>\u00a0party<\/span>\u00a0member<\/span> in Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/em>, all of which were released within the last month. Busy! <\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
