It\u2019s not an April Fool\u2019s joke \u2013 the \u2018real\u2019 Monkey Island 3 is coming from the adventure game series\u2019 original creators, and the Return to Monkey Island release date is down for this year. It\u2019s a collaboration between Lucasfilm Games\u00a0and Devolver Digital and is set after the events of Monkey Island 2.<\/p>\n

On April Fool\u2019s day, Monkey Island series creator Ron Gilbert posted a joke\u00a0on his Grumpy Gamer blog that he\u2019s \u201cdecided to make another Monkey Island\u201d, which no one took seriously. Today, Return to Monkey Island is announced, with\u00a0Gilbert confessing\u00a0that he \u201cfelt bad about the April Fools\u2019 joke, so over the weekend I whipped up the game so no one was disappointed\u201d.<\/p>\n

Return to Monkey Island is the sixth game in the long-running pirate game\u00a0series,\u00a0however, it\u2019ll be canonically set as an alternate Monkey Island 3. Ron Gilbert has stated many times\u00a0that LucasArts\u2019 own Curse of Monkey Island \u2013 which was made after he left the company \u2013 took the series in a very different direction from how he envisioned it, so his third game will pick up after Guybrush is trapped as a little kid in\u00a0the Big Whoop carnival at the end of Monkey Island 2.<\/p>\n

Secret of Monkey Island\u00a0directors Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman \u2013 who himself\u00a0helped lead\u00a0Telltale\u2019s fifth game, Tales of Monkey Island \u2013 are heading it, with Dominic Armato back as Guybrush Threepwood and Denny Delk as Murray (who was introduced in COMI, so that\u2019s one character who\u2019s not being retconned). Original series composers Michael Land, Clint Bajakian, and Psychonauts 2\u2019s Peter McConnell are back together for the first time since Escape From Monkey Island.<\/p>\n

As for the game itself, the website shows Melee Island from the original game,\u00a0with main villain LeChuck\u2019s cursed ship docked. The announcement trailer features a skeletal pirate playing LeChuck\u2019s theme tune, which Murray pops out of the shadows to listen to. The graphics seem in line with the Special Editions of the first two games.<\/p>\n
