The creators of Moonlighter have crafted a brand new tale in the form of The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story. Digital Sun and Riot Forge have outdone themselves here and made a 2D action adventure title worthy of praise.
Set in the League of Legends universe, players will take on the role of Sylas, a mage that’s been freed after years of captivity. Sylas is out for blood and revenge and you’ll be along for the ride. League of Legends players will immediately recognize Sylas as Sylas the Unshackled, a character that was added to the extensive roster of champions back in 2019.
After a fairly hefty story sequence players will take on the role of Sylas as he sets forth to end the tyranny of the Mageseekers in Demacia. As Sylas, players will be able to steal the attacks of enemies and use them against them. This creates some incredibly compelling gameplay despite being rather simple in nature.
The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story dips heavily into League of Legends lore. The storytelling is truly excellent here and from the moment you boot up the game right up until the end, it will keep you entertained. It’s a tale of revenge. Revenge against an empire that’s been imprisoning folk and causing untold strife amongst them. Sylas is out for blood and the game makes that quite clear to you in the introductory sequence.
The story in The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story is told by means of visual novel style conversations with characters and cutscenes. The game would have really been elevated if every conversation was voiced but this isn’t the case here. All the drama, intrigue, nuance, and politics between the various factions at play would have made for some truly compelling voice work and entertainment. The game is roughly around 13 hours long but may take you longer depending on your playstyle.
Moving on to the gameplay though, The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story plays out like an action-adventure side-scroll or top-down brawler. Sylas can attack with a basic combo and unleash spells and magic which has been assigned to one of 4 different slots. You can also copy enemy spells and use their own magic against them to great effect. Sylas can also use his gauntlets to propel himself across chasms and gaps and you’ll have to really use your abilities to survive in some of the latter parts of the game.
Enemies are quite varied and thankfully The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story features gorgeous visuals throughout. Graphically, the game is a feast for the eyes with every single scene being packed with gorgeous pixel graphics. There’s so much to soak up here and the attention to detail is quite praiseworthy. The visual effects for spells and attacks are also incredibly well done and each spell really does feel satisfying to pull off.
Players will also be able to recruit more mages to their cause as well as manage a base of operations and take the fight to the enemy in a variety of ways. Strategising and trying out different attacks is recommended. Boss fights in the game can be quite hard if you try to just brute force everything. You have to pay attention to attack patterns and have patience here otherwise you’re going to have a hard time. Gamers who struggle with challenging games should play the game on its easiest difficulty setting to enjoy the story.
The soundtrack of The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story is filled with some great tracks too which perfectly suit the theme of the game. Digital Sun and Riot Forge have crafted a masterful tale here and there’s not much to fault here except for the fact that the game does tend to get a bit challenging in later segments and might put some people off.
If you’ve enjoy side-scroll or top-down hack and slash titles, The Mageseeker A League of Legends Story will appeal to you. The game is not as polished as it should be, and it truly does suffer from not having a fully acted story given how some of the dialogue can keep you bogged down for a while, but it’s still a fun game with a lot of good going for it. Whether you’re a fan of League of Legends or not, this game can be enjoyed by everyone who likes a good hack and slash title. It’s not the best out there but it certainly delivers with what it does have and is definitely worth checking out.
